Dave Hobrecht's original charcoal and pastel painting of LSU Tigers legend and Heisman Trophy winner Billy Cannon, titled "Gridiron Knights."
Cannon starred at Louisiana State University in 1957, 1958 and 1959, and in 1958 the halfback led LSU to its first AP National Championship. The piece depicts his 89-yard, game-winning punt return for a touchdown that lifted #1 LSU to a 7-3 victory over #3 Ole Miss on Halloween night in 1959. Cannon won the Heisman Trophy that year, had his number 20 jersey retired by LSU, and also starred in the American Football League from 1959 to 1969.
The painting was commissioned by LSU. Dave captures the lighting effect of mid-20th century flashbulb photography.
