Custom Commissions
A one-of-one original in charcoal and pastel of the athlete, the play, or the person you choose. Not a print, not a reproduction. The only one that will ever exist, signed by Dave.
Custom Commissions
People commission work for all kinds of reasons. A father's favorite player. The moment a team finally won. A son's last high school game. A retirement gift for someone who has everything except this.
How it works
1. Tell Dave what you have in mind. Use the form below. You don't need to know exactly what you want. A player, a game, or even just a feeling is enough to start.
2. Talk it through. Dave replies personally, usually within a week. You'll discuss the moment, the composition, the size, and any reference photos you have. If the piece is of someone you know rather than a public figure, photographs matter, and the more the better.
3. Dave creates the piece. Once the details and price are agreed, you'll receive an invoice for a 50% deposit and Dave begins. Most commissions take around two months from that point, depending on size and complexity. He'll share progress along the way if you'd like to see it.
4. It arrives at your door. The finished original ships insured, ready to frame or already framed if you prefer.
What a commission costs
There is no set price, because no two commissions are the same. What it costs depends on the size of the piece, how much is in it, and how much work it takes to get right. A single figure is a different undertaking from a crowded stadium.
Dave will quote you once he understands what you're after. Nothing is owed until you've seen that quote and agreed to it. If you have a budget in mind, say so in your first message. It helps him propose something that actually fits rather than guessing.
What to think about before you write
The moment. The strongest commissions come from a specific instant rather than a general portrait: the swing, the catch, the celebration. If you can describe what was happening, Dave can draw it.
The size. Pieces range from intimate to wall-dominating. Scale drives both the price and the presence of the work, so it's worth thinking about where it will hang.
The timing. Plan on about two months from the day the piece is agreed, and add time for the conversation before that. If it's a gift for a particular date, say so in your first message. Dave's calendar fills, and rush work isn't always possible.
A note on athlete signatures
Most commissioned pieces cannot be signed by the athlete. Getting a signature depends on access, and for the large majority of commissions it simply isn't available.
If a signature matters to you, raise it in your inquiry and Dave will tell you honestly whether it's possible for that particular athlete.
Start the conversation
Fill in the form below with as much or as little as you know. Every inquiry goes straight to Dave, and there's no obligation on either side until a price is agreed.
