Fernando Remember Me

Original black-and-white charcoal painting by Dave Hobrecht.

This tribute portrays Fernando Valenzuela in his Dodgers uniform, his face painted in the tradition of Día de los Muertos, standing before the Dodger Stadium sign as flowers, candles, and heartfelt gifts from fans gather around it. The painting honors the Day of the Dead spirit of remembering those we have lost, and celebrating the joy they brought to our lives.

In 1981, a young left-hander from Etchohuaquila, Mexico, took Los Angeles by storm. With his famous skyward glance and devastating screwball, Fernando opened the season with a run of dominance that sparked “Fernandomania,” becoming the first player ever to win Rookie of the Year and the Cy Young Award in the same season and helping lead the Dodgers to a World Series championship. Beyond the numbers, he united generations of fans and opened the doors of Dodger Stadium to the Latino community like never before. After his playing days, he remained part of the Dodgers family as a beloved Spanish-language broadcaster, and in 2023 the team retired his iconic No. 34. When he passed away in October 2024, fans flocked to the stadium to leave flowers and messages in his memory.
