Dave Hobrecht's original charcoal and pastel painting of Babe Ruth.
Ruth, the New York Yankees great, baseball Hall of Famer, and original Home Run King, is arguably the greatest baseball player of all time, and his arrival in the 1920s changed the game. He started his career as a pitcher with the Boston Red Sox in 1914 and became the ace of the staff, winning 23 and 24 games in 1916 and 1917. His ERA with Boston was 2.19, and he amassed 94 career wins.
After switching to full-time outfielder in 1919 and setting the single-season home run record with 29, he was sold to the Yankees. Ruth broke his own record with 54 home runs in 1920 and 59 in 1921, then hit 60 in 1927, a record that would stand for almost 35 years. He finished his career with 714 home runs.
