Dave Hobrecht's original charcoal and pastel painting of the Dodgers leaving Brooklyn for Los Angeles.
On May 28, 1957, National League owners voted unanimously to allow the Dodgers to leave Brooklyn and the Giants to leave Upper Manhattan beginning with the 1958 season. The Dodgers played their first game in Los Angeles on April 18, 1958, beating the Giants in front of 78,672 fans.
The Dodgers, under different nicknames including the Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers beginning in 1895, had been part of Brooklyn since 1884. Even without a World Series win in its first 70 years, the franchise was an institution, and the fan base was crushed by the departure. In Los Angeles the Dodgers played four seasons at the Los Angeles Coliseum before Dodger Stadium opened in 1962.
