Gibby Meets Freddie

Original black-and-white charcoal painting by Dave Hobrecht.

This painting captures Freddie Freeman in the moment right after contact, his bat raised high in the air as he begins his walk toward first base, knowing the ball is gone and Dodger Stadium is about to erupt.

In Game 1 of the 2024 World Series against the New York Yankees, with the Dodgers trailing by a run in the bottom of the 10th, Freeman stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and drove the first pitch into the right-field pavilion for the first walk-off grand slam in World Series history. Playing through a badly sprained ankle, Freeman delivered a moment that instantly echoed Kirk Gibson’s legendary hobbled walk-off home run in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series, 36 years earlier on the same field. Freeman went on to homer in each of the first four games and was named World Series MVP as the Dodgers claimed the championship.
