"Pipe" was the first painting Hobrecht ever created in his signature black and white style of dry brush applying a proprietary blend of ground charcoal and pastel. It harks back to Hobrecht's years as a young surfer growing up riding the waves of his hometown Huntington Beach, California, also known as, Surf City USA. He created it when just beginning his career as a professional artist, as Editorial Cartoonist for Surfer Magazine.
