Ripken set the record for most consecutive games played in baseball history, with 2,632, breaking the record of 2,130 set by Lou Gehrig and that many believed to be unbeatable. Ripken was a 19-time All-Star and 2-time AL MVP. He collected 3,184 hits, slugged 431 HRs, and ushered in a new era of shortstops, like Derek Jeter, who was excellent defensively and could also hit for power and average. Hobrecht painted the original piece for Ripken based on an image of him playing the infield that was hand-picked by Cal.
