When Orel matched Drydale's mark with nine shutout innings, he wanted to come out of the game. "I wanted to stop at 58," he said. "I wanted Don and me to be at the top together. I didn't want to break it." But Tommy Lasorda and pitching coach Ron Perranoski had a different idea. Orel went back out for the 10th inning. And the inning didn't go easily. The game ended with runners on second and third base and two out as Keith Moreland flew out to right fielder Jose Gonzalez. Orel stood alone - both on the mound for a moment before being congratulated by his teammates - and in baseball history for the most consecutive scoreless innings. As Orel left the mound inundated by teammates, he reached the Dodgers dugout to be greeted by a radio announcer with microphone in hand - Don Drysdale.
